Is caregiving the same everywhere?

Caregiving may be universal. The conditions surrounding it are not.

Through the voices of families caring for people with cancer and dementia, Narratives of Care: Puerto Rico explores what becomes visible when we listen closely to how caregiving is shaped by place.

Narratives of Care

Puerto Rico

These stories offer a window into caregiving in Puerto Rico.

Through oral histories centered primarily on families navigating cancer and dementia, the series brings individual experiences into conversation with one another and asks what becomes visible when we listen across them.

They are not presented as the definitive Puerto Rican caregiving experience, but as individual stories that allow us to see something larger when placed beside one another.

THE VOICES

The story is told by the people who lived it

Rather than speaking for Puerto Rican caregivers, this series listens closely to individual people whose experiences reveal different parts of the caregiving landscape.

Why I Made This

Why I went looking

“I understood caregiving. I wanted to look more closely at what happens when place becomes part of the story.”

I came to this project as both a caregiver and a Puerto Rican born and raised in the States. I knew what it meant to care for someone I love.

What I wanted to explore more closely was how the world surrounding a caregiver: family, healthcare, geography, infrastructure and community changes the experience itself.

So I went to Puerto Rico to listen.
